Poros might not have the jet-setter reputation of islands like Mykonos, but keep your eyes peeled because you might just spot a celebrity walking along the quay. Celebrities spotted in recent summers included actors Michael Douglas with Catherine Zeta-Jones, director Steven Spielberg, Chelsea captain John Terry, and assorted moguls. Luxury mega-yachts are a good clue and while everyone respects visitors’ privacy, you’ll still see people Googling cruiser names on their tablets and smartphones to check the boat’s owner.
Teal-colored coves aren’t Poros’s sole attractions and many celebrities, especially writers and painters, have found the island energizing. Henry Miller spent enough time on the island to describe it in his Colossus of Marousi, while the American poet James Merrill was also impressed enough by his stay to include it in his The Diblus Notebook. A frequent guest was Greta Garbo, the reclusive Hollywood icon, who spent several summers on the island over a period of three decades. As for artists, the island has played host to Marc Chagall, Lucien Freud, and John Craxton.
