These graceful birds are known to us as flamingoes, but their scientific name is Phoenicopterus, from the Greek words for purple and wing—so it’s only fitting that their migration routes include stops at Greek wetlands like Psifta.

These beautiful wading birds with the slim necks and long legs were captured on camera in these gorgeous natural surroundings by Yannis Drougas.

It’s not the first time flamingoes have been spotted at Psifta but in recent years they have been appearing more regularly and more often at this lesser-known coastal wetlands. This “area of exquisite natural beauty” is part of the Natura 2000 network and home or resting place for several bird species which can be watched from observation kiosks. It’s a just a short drive from Galatas and a great way to spend the day.
